REED CAREFULY

...to find something interesting in an ordinary place, something tragic, something funny, something beautiful...

More Don River pics

The first time that I remember a storm flooding the DVP was the one on May 12, 2000, which also contributed to the Walkerton E. coli outbreak. I remember it because the storm happened while I was on a cruise with friends on Lake Ontario, and it was the night I fell in love with the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star."

On the way home from the cruise at about 2 a.m. a friend and I joined the people lined up along the Gerrard Street bridge to watch emergency crews help the hundreds of motorists stranded by the flooding. We got there in time to see some guys in a Jeep drive along the most outer lane of the DVP, the one on the highest ground and with the lowest water level, yelling "get a Jeep... get a Jeep...." to the five lanes of stalled/stopped traffic.

It wasn't nearly as dramatic this time.
